The fire quickly spread, engulfing at least 18 tents, including those of nearby Prayagwal pilgrims. The situation was brought under control by the prompt response of local authorities and the deployment of 15 fire tenders.
District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar, in a video statement, confirmed that the fire brigade and police teams were quick to reach the site, ensuring that the flames were extinguished before causing any casualties. “The situation is normal, and no casualties have been reported,” Mandar assured. Despite the extensive damage to the property, all individuals were evacuated safely, with no injuries reported.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Visits the Site
Upon learning of the incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site to assess the damage and oversee the relief operations. His office later tweeted in Hindi, saying, “CM Yogi Adityanath took cognizance of the fire incident at the Maha Kumbh Mela area in Prayagraj, conducted an on-site inspection, and reviewed the situation. He directed the concerned officials to carry out relief work on a war footing.”
The Maha Kumbh Mela’s official X handle expressed the collective sentiment of the administration and attendees: “Very sad! The fire incident at #MahaKumbh has shocked everyone. The administration is ensuring immediate relief and rescue operations. We pray Maa Ganga for everyone’s safety.”
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is one of the most significant spiritual gatherings globally, drawing millions of pilgrims who come to Prayagraj to take a ritualistic dip at the Triveni Sangam—the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. This year’s Mela, which began on January 13, 2025, is expected to see over 400 million visitors throughout its 45-day duration.
The incident has prompted authorities to reassess and strengthen safety protocols to ensure such mishaps do not recur. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also deployed to assist in controlling the fire and providing aid to those affected.
