Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana, aims to help Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) between the ages of 45 and 65 reconnect with their spiritual and cultural roots
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a state-of-the-art tourist train designed exclusively for the Indian diaspora. This initiative, conducted under the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana, aims to help Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) between the ages of 45 and 65 reconnect with their spiritual and cultural roots.
The three-week journey, which began from Safdarjung Railway Station in New Delhi on January 9, 2025, will cover 156 passengers. The train will traverse iconic destinations of tourism and religious significance, including Ayodhya, Patna, Gaya, Varanasi, Mahabalipuram, Rameshwaram, Madurai, Kochi, Goa, Ekta Nagar (Kevadia), Ajmer, Pushkar, and Agra.
Key Features and Benefits:
- Exclusively for Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) aged 45-65, with preference given to individuals from low-income groups who might not otherwise afford such a trip.
- The Indian government is funding all travel and accommodation expenses, while covering 90% of return airfare for eligible participants. Participants are only required to pay 10% of airfare costs.
- Accommodation during the tour is provided in 4-star or equivalent hotels, ensuring a comfortable experience.
The train offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience India’s spiritual richness and cultural diversity. Participants will explore revered religious sites and historically significant landmarks, fostering a deeper connection with their ancestral heritage.
In his address, PM Modi highlighted the significance of initiatives like the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, Ramayana Express, and Bharat Gaurav trains, which connect people to India’s vast cultural legacy. He also emphasized the success of Vande Bharat trains in linking major heritage cities.
This initiative celebrates India’s diversity and strengthens the bond between the diaspora and their homeland. The Pravasi Bharatiya Express represents a milestone in promoting tourism and cultural exchange while honoring the Indian diaspora’s contributions to the global community.
