Most of us think our stomach only works when there is food inside it. Between meals, we assume it simply rests, waiting for the next plate to arrive. The truth is far more interesting. Your gut has its own quiet shift schedule, and it clocks in roughly every 90 minutes, whether you have eaten anything or not.
This process is called the migrating motor complex, or MMC for short. It was first described by a researcher named Dr. Szurszewski back in 1968, and doctors often call it the gut’s “interdigestive housekeeper.” The name fits well, because that is essentially its job.
Here is how it works. During the gaps between meals, when your stomach is empty, a wave of muscle contractions begins in the stomach and travels down through the small intestine. This wave sweeps forward like a broom, pushing along leftover food particles, bacteria, and digestive secretions that did not get cleared during the main digestion process.
This cleaning cycle typically repeats every 90 to 120 minutes during a true fasting state. It moves through a few distinct phases: a quiet resting period, a slow build-up of gentle contractions, and then a short, powerful burst of coordinated muscle waves that does the actual sweeping. After that burst, the whole cycle winds down and starts again.
The catch is that this housekeeping only happens when your gut is actually fasting. The moment you eat or drink something with calories, even a small snack or a sweetened cup of tea, the MMC switches off. Your gut shifts its attention entirely to digesting and absorbing that new food, and the cleaning wave has to wait until you are done.
This is where modern eating habits quietly work against us. Grazing through the day, nibbling on snacks every hour or two, or sipping on juice and milky beverages between meals keeps the gut in an almost constant “fed” state. The MMC never gets a long enough gap to complete its full cycle.
Over time, this incomplete housekeeping can allow undigested particles and bacteria to linger longer than they should in the small intestine. Some researchers link this pattern to bloating, sluggish digestion, and in some cases, bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. None of this means snacking occasionally is harmful. It simply means that a gut that never gets a break rarely gets a proper clean.
The good news is that supporting this natural cycle does not require anything drastic. Most experts suggest leaving a gap of roughly three to five hours between meals, so the MMC has enough time to run through at least one full cycle before more food arrives. Plain water, black tea, or black coffee generally do not interrupt this process the way calorie-containing drinks or snacks do.
Nighttime is when this cleaning cycle tends to work hardest, since the overnight gap between dinner and breakfast is usually the longest fasting stretch most people get in a day. This is one reason why late-night eating, even something as small as a bowl of cereal at midnight, can quietly cut short the gut’s most effective cleaning window.
It is worth remembering that the goal here is balance, not extreme restriction. Skipping meals for very long stretches or fasting excessively is not necessarily better for your gut, and can bring its own set of problems. The idea is simply to give your digestive system enough uninterrupted time between meals to do the job it was built to do.
There is something quietly reassuring about knowing this rhythm exists. Long after a meal is over, and long before hunger even shows up, your gut is already at work behind the scenes, clearing out the remains of what came before. It does this without needing to be reminded, roughly every ninety minutes, day and night.
