A new roll-on/roll-off passenger (RoPAX) ferry service is set to transform travel between Mumbai and Goa, allowing passengers to take their vehicles onboard for a smooth and scenic journey. The service, currently in the approval stage, promises to reduce travel time and offer an alternative to road and rail transport.

A 15-year-old vessel, recently brought from Italy, is undergoing maintenance in Mumbai. Once operational, the ferry will connect Ferry Wharf in Mumbai to Mormugao Port Authority in Goa. Talks are also underway to include a stop at Panaji, making the service more convenient for travellers.

The ferry will accommodate 620 passengers and 60 cars, completing the journey in approximately 6.5 hours—a significant reduction compared to road travel, which often takes over 10 hours.

The service is awaiting clearance from the Director General of Shipping and other authorities. Once approved, it is expected to be a game-changer for those who frequently drive between the two states.

The fare structure has yet to be finalised, but the operators have requested government subsidies on fuel VAT and tax concessions to keep ticket prices competitive.

For travellers who love Goa’s beaches but hate the long road trip, this ferry could be a perfect solution. Driving through highways with unpredictable traffic will no longer be necessary—just sail across the Arabian Sea and arrive with your car, hassle-free.

The move is also expected to ease road congestion and offer a greener alternative to long highway drives, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

If all goes as planned, this could be one of the most exciting travel upgrades for Mumbai-Goa routes in recent times. Get ready to sail, drive, and explore!
