Mumbai Metro One has become the first metro service in India to introduce metro passes through WhatsApp, making daily travel easier for lakhs of commuters. Passengers travelling on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor can now buy, store and use their metro passes without downloading a separate app or carrying a physical card.
The new digital pass can be purchased in just a few steps. Commuters simply need to send “Hi” to Mumbai Metro One’s official WhatsApp number, select the booking option, choose a digital pass and complete the payment. The pass is issued instantly and is ready to use immediately after purchase.
One of the biggest advantages of the new system is that the pass can also be added to Google Wallet and Apple Wallet, allowing passengers to access it directly from their smartphones. The service offers two options – a Trip Pass for regular travellers who prefer buying a fixed number of journeys in advance, and a Store Value Pass that lets users load any amount and pay only for the trips they take.
The platform has been developed with Billeasy, while PayU India powers the payment system, supporting UPI, debit cards and credit cards for secure transactions.
Mumbai Metro One first introduced WhatsApp-based QR ticket booking in 2022. With the addition of digital passes, the metro operator aims to reduce queues at ticket counters, minimise the use of physical cards and make everyday commuting faster and more convenient.
Having completed over 12 years of operations and served more than 125 crore passengers, Mumbai Metro One continues to adopt technology-driven solutions to improve the travel experience for Mumbaikars. The latest initiative is another step towards making public transport smarter, paperless and more accessible.
