Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the brave men and women who participated in the historic Quit India Movement, saying their courage and determination continue to inspire every Indian. On the anniversary of the movement, the Prime Minister remembered the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and said their unwavering commitment remains a guiding force for the nation.
In a message shared on X, Prime Minister Modi recalled the significance of the Quit India Movement and the role it played in strengthening India’s fight against British colonial rule. He said the movement, inspired by the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, injected fresh energy into the freedom struggle and reflected the collective resolve of millions of Indians to achieve independence.
The Quit India Movement, also known as the August Movement, was launched on August 8, 1942, during the All India Congress Committee session held in Bombay, now Mumbai. Addressing the nation, Mahatma Gandhi gave his famous “Do or Die” call, urging Indians to unite and intensify the demand for complete independence from British rule. The movement soon spread across the country, drawing participation from people of all ages and backgrounds.
Remembering this defining chapter in India’s history, Prime Minister Modi said the courage displayed by those who took part in the movement would always remain an inspiration. He noted that the determination of ordinary citizens, freedom fighters, students, workers and social leaders demonstrated the strength of a united nation striving for freedom.
In his post on X, the Prime Minister said:
“Remembering all those who participated in the historic Quit India Movement. Their courage will always remain an inspiration for every Indian. Inspired by the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi Ji, the clarion call of Quit India infused new energy into our freedom struggle and reflected the unwavering determination of our people to break free from colonial rule.”
The Quit India Movement is widely regarded as one of the most significant milestones in India’s independence movement. Although the British administration responded with mass arrests of national leaders, censorship and strict action against protesters, the movement continued across many parts of the country. Demonstrations, strikes, student protests and acts of civil disobedience reflected the growing demand for complete independence.
Many leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, were arrested soon after the movement began. Despite the detention of senior leaders, thousands of Indians continued the struggle, keeping the spirit of the movement alive. Their determination strengthened the national movement and reinforced the call for self-rule.
Historians consider the Quit India Movement a turning point in India’s freedom struggle. While independence was achieved five years later in 1947, the movement demonstrated that the desire for freedom had become unstoppable. It united people from different regions, communities and social backgrounds under a common national objective.
Every year, August 9 is observed to commemorate the sacrifices and contributions of those who participated in the Quit India Movement. Across the country, tributes are paid to the freedom fighters whose courage and commitment helped shape India’s future. Educational institutions, government organisations and various cultural bodies organise programmes to remember the movement and its lasting impact on the nation’s history.
Prime Minister Modi’s tribute highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of the freedom fighters and passing on their values to future generations. He emphasised that their patriotism, resilience and dedication continue to inspire citizens to work towards the progress and development of the country while upholding the ideals of democracy, unity and national service.
The Quit India Movement remains one of the defining moments of India’s freedom struggle. More than eight decades later, it continues to symbolise the power of collective action, sacrifice and unwavering commitment to the cause of independence. As the nation remembers the historic movement, the contributions of countless known and unknown freedom fighters continue to be honoured for their role in securing India’s freedom.
