On Sunday during a BSP national executive meeting in Lucknow, Mayawati announced the removal of Akash Anand, who had been serving as the party’s national coordinator and was previously considered her political successor. In his place, she appointed her brother, Anand Kumar, and Rajya Sabha MP Ramji Gautam as national coordinators to oversee party affairs nationwide.

Mayawati firmly stated that she would not name a successor during her lifetime, emphasizing that the party and its movement take precedence over familial ties. She highlighted that personal relationships, including those with siblings and their children, are secondary to the party’s interests.
This decision follows a series of unpredictable moves by Mayawati concerning Akash Anand’s political trajectory. Last year, she dismissed him from his roles, only to reinstate him later as her potential successor. The recent expulsion of Akash’s father-in-law, Ashok Siddharth, from the BSP on charges of factionalism and anti-party activities, further underscores the internal challenges within the party.

Anand Kumar, Mayawati’s brother, has been a longstanding figure within the BSP. He previously served as the party’s national vice-president and has been recognized for his dedication, including managing administrative and legal matters for the party. His appointment as national coordinator signifies a strategic move to stabilize and strengthen the party’s internal structure.
These developments highlight Mayawati’s authoritative leadership style and her commitment to prioritizing the BSP’s organizational integrity over familial considerations. As the party prepares for upcoming electoral challenges, these internal shifts aim to reinforce its foundational principles and operational effectiveness.
