Vatican city: Pope Francis has been discharged from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after a five-week stay for severe pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff returned to the Vatican on Sunday, where he will continue his recovery under close medical supervision.
A health scare that shook the vatican
Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on 14 February after experiencing respiratory distress. Initially diagnosed with bronchitis, his condition deteriorated into double pneumonia, a severe infection affecting both lungs. Doctors revealed that the Pope also suffered from complications, including anaemia and mild kidney dysfunction, leading to a prolonged hospital stay.
Throughout his time in hospital, Pope Francis required oxygen support and underwent a series of treatments, including non-invasive ventilation and blood transfusions. His fragile health sparked concern among Catholics worldwide, with well-wishers gathering outside the hospital to pray for his recovery.
First public appearance in five weeks
On Sunday, the Pope made his first public appearance in over a month, briefly greeting supporters from a hospital balcony before his discharge. Seated in a wheelchair, he waved to the crowd and expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thank you for your prayers and support.” His well-wishers responded with cheers and chants of “Viva il Papa!”
Following his release, the Pope made an unscheduled stop at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major to offer prayers before returning to the Vatican.
Limited activities in the coming weeks
Doctors have advised Pope Francis to rest and avoid strenuous activities for at least two months. While he remains dedicated to his papal responsibilities, his schedule will be adjusted to accommodate his recovery.
The Vatican has yet to confirm whether the Pope will participate in upcoming Easter celebrations or his planned visit to Turkey. Officials have assured the public that his health is steadily improving, but his engagements will depend on medical advice.
A city celebrates his recovery
The Pope’s return has been met with joy across Rome. In Piazza Risorgimento, a gelato shop introduced a special ‘Hallelujah’ flavour—a mix of roasted hazelnuts and chocolate—to celebrate his recovery.
As Pope Francis regains strength, the Catholic community worldwide continues to pray for his health, hoping to see him resume his duties soon.
