India will observe Mahavir Jayanti on Thursday, April 10, 2025, with a public holiday declared in many states. The day commemorates the birth of Lord Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, and is considered one of the most important religious events in the Jain calendar.
According to the Reserve Bank of India’s official holiday calendar, April 10 has been declared a bank holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act in multiple regions. Most public and private sector banks will remain closed.
Educational institutions across major cities are also expected to remain shut. Parents are advised to check with individual schools and colleges for confirmation of holiday schedules.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have officially confirmed that the share market will remain closed for trading on April 10, 2025. This closure includes equity, derivatives, and SLB segments. Commodity derivatives and currency markets will also remain shut.
Government offices in many states, especially where Jain communities have a strong presence, will remain closed for the day. These include cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
Essential services like hospitals, emergency care, pharmacies, and public transport will continue to function as usual. However, metro and bus services in some cities may operate on a holiday schedule with limited frequency.
Retail outlets, malls, and restaurants are likely to remain open but may see reduced footfall due to the public holiday.
Mahavir Jayanti is celebrated with processions, temple visits, and community service. Jain temples across India will organise spiritual events including prayer meetings, lectures, and charity drives.
Citizens are encouraged to plan ahead as public services and banking operations will remain suspended on the day of the festival.
