Mumbai’s summer spell may just be interrupted — with rain and thunder in the mix. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for May 13 and 14 across Mumbai and nearby districts.
What’s the Forecast?
As per IMD, rain with lightning and thunder is expected in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad. The alert suggests isolated showers and a possible dip in temperatures.
Raigad, Thane, and Palghar may also experience similar weather. Thundercloud formation is likely, with gusty winds up to 40 km/h.
Why the Sudden Shift?
The sudden weather change is linked to increased convectional activity and the inflow of moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea. These winds rise due to surface heating, causing cloud formation and instability in the atmosphere. This pattern is a classic sign of pre-monsoon behaviour, usually seen during mid to late May. As temperatures rise and humidity builds, such conditions often trigger localised thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds across coastal Maharashtra.
How Should You Prepare?
- Carry umbrellas or raincoats
- Watch for waterlogging in low-lying areas
- Drive carefully — roads may turn slippery
- Keep electronic devices protected during lightning
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely. However, no red or orange alert has been sounded yet.
What Does Yellow Alert Mean?
A yellow alert signals weather that’s not extreme but still needs caution. It’s a heads-up for changing conditions, not a panic button.
