Priya Nair has made history. As Hindustan Unilever’s (HUL) first woman CEO and MD, she marks a new chapter for the 90-year-old company. Starting as a management trainee in 1995, Priya has left her mark on beauty, home care, and personal care sectors over three decades. Previously Unilever’s Global Chief Marketing Officer and President of Beauty & Wellbeing, she will lead HUL from 1 August 2025. Her story teaches us that hard work, a thirst for learning, and purposeful leadership can turn dreams into reality.
Have you ever wondered how someone rises from humble beginnings to rewrite history? Priya Nair’s story is one such tale. On 10 July 2025, Hindustan Unilever (HUL), India’s largest FMCG company, announced that Priya Nair would take the helm as its new CEO and Managing Director from 1 August. This news reverberates not just in corporate boardrooms but in the heart of every Indian who believes in the power of dreams. As HUL’s first woman CEO, Priya is not just a leader; she is a beacon of perseverance, passion, and purpose-driven leadership.
Her journey began in 1995, when, armed with an MBA from Sydenham College, Mumbai, and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune, Priya joined HUL as a management trainee. In an era when women were sparsely represented in corporate India, she carved her path with grit and talent. From sales to marketing, she mastered the intricacies of home care, beauty, and personal care. Brands like Dove, Rin, Sunsilk, and Comfort soared to new heights under her stewardship. HUL Chairman Nitin Paranjpe remarked, “Priya’s deep understanding of the Indian market and stellar track record will propel HUL to greater heights.”
Yet, Priya’s story transcends degrees and designations. She is a leader who places purpose at the core of her work. From 2014 to 2020, as Executive Director of HUL’s Home Care division, she championed sustainability and premiumisation. Rin and Comfort, household names in India, were revitalised under her vision. Later, from 2020 to 2022, as Executive Director of Beauty & Personal Care, she steered Dove and Sunsilk into the digital age, leveraging social media and influencer marketing to captivate younger consumers.
In 2022, Priya joined Unilever’s Global Leadership Executive (ULE), a rare feat for an Indian woman. Based in London, she led Unilever’s Beauty & Wellbeing division, overseeing a business worth over €13 billion. Global brands like Dove, Vaseline, and Lux flourished under her strategic direction. What sets Priya apart is her belief that brands should do more than sell products—they should drive positive change. Her leadership style echoes the words of Indian industrialist J.R.D. Tata: “Business without purpose is merely a means to make money, not to build society.” Priya has made this philosophy her guiding light.
As Unilever’s Global Chief Marketing Officer, she crafted campaigns that resonated with digital-savvy youth. Her focus on sustainability, digital innovation, and inclusivity has defined her career. Now, as she steps into HUL’s corner office, Priya faces a dynamic yet challenging Indian FMCG market. Inflation, shifting consumer preferences, and the digital revolution pose hurdles. Her task is to steer HUL through these challenges while strengthening its ‘Aspire’ strategy. Rohit Jawa, whom she succeeds, stabilised HUL during his two-year tenure. The expectations from Priya, however, are sky-high.
Beyond the boardroom, Priya’s personal life is equally inspiring. Married with a daughter, she has remained rooted in her Indian heritage despite her years in London. Her story resonates with millions of Indian women aspiring to break into corporate leadership. HUL has long been known as a ‘CEO factory’, producing leaders like Leena Nair (now Chanel’s Global CEO) and Rohit Jawa. Priya upholds and elevates this legacy.
Her ascent is not just a win for HUL but a milestone for Indian corporate culture. She is not merely taking charge of a company; she is inspiring countless women to chase their ambitions. As she steps into her role on 1 August 2025, India will be watching. Can she lead HUL to new heights? Her journey so far suggests she has the mettle to turn the impossible into reality.
