The road to the 98th Academy Awards has officially opened for Indian filmmakers. The Film Federation of India (FFI) has kickstarted the process to select India’s official entry for the prestigious Oscars. Applications will be accepted from 15 August to 10 September 2025, marking the beginning of the country’s biggest film contest of the year.
The decision was made during a recent FFI executive meeting. A jury chaired by a senior industry expert, along with members from India’s creative community, will screen the submitted films. The final selection will be made by vote after all screenings conclude. The chosen film will be announced on 28 September 2025.
What Makes a Film Eligible?
Not every film can make the cut. To qualify:
- The film must be released in India between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025.
- It must have a theatrical run of at least 7 consecutive days.
- At least 60% of the dialogue must be in an Indian language or dialect.
- Official proof of release and theatre screening is mandatory.
This ensures that only the most deserving and widely released films are considered.
