The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Sampark Foundation have launched the innovative ‘Smart School-Smart Block’ programme across 217 municipal schools in Mumbai. This initiative aims to transform classrooms and improve foundational learning through technology and teacher training.
The programme was inaugurated by Bhushan Gagrani, BMC Commissioner, along with key officials and Sampark Foundation leaders. It directly benefits over 3,000 students and equips 434 teachers with new skills and digital tools.
Under this scheme, 273 classrooms will be converted into smart classrooms. Schools in wards like Chembur, Bhandup, Dadar, Parel, Byculla, and Borivali will receive 159 smart TV panels. These will support interactive learning using Sampark’s specially designed Teaching Learning Material.
Sampark Foundation, which has a five-year MoU with Maharashtra’s government, has already converted over 14,000 classrooms across 13 districts into smart classrooms. The foundation’s commitment includes ₹100 crores aimed at making education simpler and more engaging.
The programme’s technology includes the Sampark FLN TV—a plug-and-play device turning any TV into an interactive learning hub. It offers over 1,000 hours of offline content aligned with state curricula, such as videos, games, worksheets, and brain exercises for Classes 1 to 5.
Teacher training and community engagement form an integral part of the initiative. The BMC will oversee monthly reviews and refresher training to track progress and ensure long-term impact.
Nationally, Sampark’s Smart Shala programme has benefited over 1.8 crore children, trained more than 8.5 lakh teachers, and created 40,000 smart classrooms. Learning outcomes in foundational literacy and numeracy have nearly doubled within a year.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards digitising government education and empowering students with modern learning tools.
