The race for India’s next Vice-President is taking shape with both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition bloc announcing their candidates. The contest is expected to be significant, not just for the Rajya Sabha but also for the political narrative ahead of the 2029 general elections.
BJP’s Choice: C. P. Radhakrishnan
The BJP has put forward C. P. Radhakrishnan, a seasoned leader from Tamil Nadu, as its Vice-Presidential candidate. Radhakrishnan, known for his clean image and long political career, represents the BJP’s attempt to expand its footprint in the southern states. His nomination is seen as part of the party’s larger strategy to strengthen its influence in Tamil Nadu, where it continues to face stiff resistance from regional parties.
Opposition’s Candidate: Justice B. Sudershan Reddy
In a move aimed at countering the BJP’s choice, the Opposition has named Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, former Supreme Court judge, as its candidate. Justice Reddy, respected for his judicial career and integrity, brings a non-political face to the contest. The Opposition hopes his candidature will highlight issues of constitutional values, neutrality, and the need for checks and balances in democracy.
Although the BJP-led NDA holds a majority in Parliament, making Radhakrishnan the likely winner, the Opposition’s decision is more symbolic. By fielding Justice Reddy, they aim to send a strong political message emphasising the importance of institutions, independent voices, and constitutional morality in governance.
The Vice-President’s role, especially as the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, is crucial in managing debates and legislative processes. With growing political polarisation, the election highlights two contrasting approaches:
- BJP’s political outreach through a seasoned party leader.
- Opposition’s institutional appeal through a former judge.
Whichever way the results turn out, the contest reflects the deeper ideological battle shaping Indian politics between majoritarian consolidation and the call for constitutional balance.
