India remembered a voice that once flowed through every home with warmth, grace and rare intimacy. On his death anniversary, Deshwale pays tribute to Ameen Sayani, the legendary broadcaster whose greeting, “Behno aur Bhaiyo…”, became a cultural embrace for generations of listeners.
Honouring his extraordinary legacy, Mobius Films and Rajil Sayani present Behno Aur Bhaiyo, a feature-length docu-biopic that celebrates the life and enduring resonance of the man who shaped India’s musical memory for over five decades.
Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Brahmanand S Singh along with Tanvi Jain, the film revisits the golden age of radio, when voices painted pictures and melodies travelled across borders. It recalls a time when families gathered around their radio sets every Wednesday at 8 pm, waiting for the familiar cadence that made them feel personally addressed.
At the heart of the documentary lies the phenomenon of Binaca Geetmala, the iconic countdown show that defined Hindi film music for decades. Through rare family archives, unseen photographs, handwritten scripts and carefully restored audio recordings, the film captures the flowering of Hindi cinema’s musical era. More importantly, it captures the warmth of a broadcaster who turned airwaves into a shared national space.
Sayani’s voice was not merely an introduction to songs. It was reassuring. It was companionship. In an age before television dominated living rooms, radio created imagination, and Ameen Sayani gave that imagination a human heartbeat. His style was gentle yet confident, formal yet affectionate. Listeners felt he was speaking directly to them.
From the creators of Pancham Unmixed and Kaagaz Ki Kashti, Behno Aur Bhaiyo is both remembrance and celebration. It honours not only a broadcaster but an era when sound carried emotion across cities, villages and generations.
As we mark his death anniversary, the film reminds us that while voices may fall silent, their echoes endure. Ameen Sayani’s greeting still lives on in memory, in music and in the collective nostalgia of a nation.
