Bombay Gymkhana marked a landmark moment as it completed 150 years since its establishment in 1875. The milestone was commemorated with the release of a special postage stamp, recognising the institution’s long contribution to Indian sport.
The commemorative stamp was unveiled by Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Minister for Development of North Eastern Region. The event brought together India’s sporting heritage and its postal legacy on a national platform.
Addressing the gathering, Scindia said postage stamps are more than collectibles. He said they serve as narratives that reflect the history and values of a nation. According to him, the stamp dedicated to Bombay Gymkhana honours an institution that has played a key role in shaping India’s sporting culture for over a century and a half.
He described Bombay Gymkhana as a symbol of excellence, discipline and community spirit. Such institutions, he said, continue to strengthen India’s identity and presence globally.
Founded in 1875, Bombay Gymkhana is recognised as India’s first authentic multi-sport ecosystem. Over the decades, it has supported sporting activity across several disciplines, including cricket, hockey, tennis, badminton, squash and athletics.
The release of the commemorative stamp was positioned as more than a tribute to the past. It also conveyed a message for future generations to embrace sport, discipline and heritage. As Bombay Gymkhana marks 150 years of its journey, the stamp stands as a lasting reminder of its enduring legacy.
