Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport reopened today after a nine-month closure. The terminal was shut in July 2023 following a canopy collapse that killed one person and injured several others.
After structural repairs and safety checks, the terminal is back in operation. All domestic flight operations from Terminal 2 (T2) are being shifted to the newly renovated T1.
Indigo and Akasa Air Move to T1
Two major domestic carriers, IndiGo and Akasa Air, have fully moved their flights to Terminal 1. Passengers flying with these airlines must now check in at T1. The shift is part of a broader airport infrastructure consolidation.
According to officials, this change will help streamline passenger flow and improve operational efficiency. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) confirmed that all T2 domestic flights now operate from T1.
What’s New at T1?
The renovated terminal comes with modern facilities. These include better lighting, more check-in counters, and upgraded baggage systems. The terminal also promises faster security checks and more retail outlets for passengers.
DIAL has issued an advisory urging passengers to double-check terminal details before travelling. The sudden shift may cause confusion in the first few days.
Why Was T1 Closed?
In July 2023, a section of T1’s canopy collapsed during heavy rain. One person died, and several others were injured. A public outcry followed, prompting investigations and a major structural overhaul. The terminal remained closed for safety and repair work.
Now, after extensive audits and redesigns, T1 is open and deemed safe.
Travel Advisory
Passengers flying with IndiGo (starting with flight numbers 6E 2000–6E 2999) or Akasa Air should arrive early and check updated terminal info via SMS or official apps. Airport signage has also been updated to direct travellers correctly.
The Delhi airport sees over 190,000 passengers daily. This terminal reshuffle is expected to ease congestion and restore normalcy at the facility.
