Denmark edged out Portugal with a narrow 1-0 win in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final. A late strike from Rasmus Højlund made the difference, putting the Danes in control ahead of the return leg in Lisbon.
A game of missed chances and one decisive moment
The night at Parken Stadium started with Denmark pressing high and looking dangerous. Mika Biereth nearly forced a mistake early on, charging down Diogo Costa’s clearance, but the ball deflected out of play. Portugal responded with Pedro Neto testing Kasper Schmeichel from distance, but the veteran keeper was up to the task.
Denmark had a golden chance to take the lead in the first half when Christian Eriksen stepped up for a penalty after a handball in the box. But Costa came to Portugal’s rescue, diving low to his right to keep the score level.
The hosts didn’t back down. Eriksen saw another effort cleared off the line, and Biereth’s shot was brilliantly saved by Costa, keeping Portugal in the game.
Højlund steals the show
Portugal, despite their attacking firepower, struggled to break through Denmark’s disciplined defence. Cristiano Ronaldo had a quiet night, rarely getting a clear sight of goal.
With just over 10 minutes left, Denmark finally found their breakthrough. A well-timed pass from Andreas Skov Olsen found Højlund, who coolly slotted it past Costa. The Manchester United striker celebrated in style, mimicking Ronaldo’s famous ‘siu’ celebration – a cheeky nod to the legend watching on.
Portugal pushed for an equaliser, but Denmark’s defence stood firm. Schmeichel had little to do as the visitors failed to register a shot on target in the second half until stoppage time.
Lisbon awaits: Can Portugal bounce back?
The return leg in Lisbon is now set up for a thrilling finish. Portugal will need a much-improved performance to overturn the deficit, while Denmark will look to finish the job and book their spot in the semi-finals.
One thing’s for sure – this tie is far from over.
