In a major update, Google has introduced an ‘Undo’ button in its popular Gboard app, offering users the ability to restore deleted text effortlessly. This long-awaited feature is currently available in the beta version and is expected to roll out for public use soon.

What Is the ‘Undo’ Button?

The ‘Undo’ button is a new feature designed to let users recover accidentally erased text. It is part of Google’s effort to make Gboard, the default keyboard app on most Android devices, more intuitive and user-friendly.

Previously, Gboard users lacked the ability to bring back deleted text—a critical functionality that many third-party keyboards offered. With this update, Google addresses a significant gap in its virtual keyboard’s functionality.

How Does It Work?

According to a report by 9to5Google, the feature is introduced in version 14.9.06.x of the Gboard beta app. Users can access the ‘Undo’ button in the following ways:

  1. Settings Menu:
The button is available in the Settings section under the overflow menu.
  2. Suggestions Row:
Users can drag the ‘Undo’ button to the suggestions row for quicker access while typing.
  3. Gboard Strip Icons:
Both ‘Undo’ and ‘Redo’ buttons can be added to the Gboard strip, accompanied by intuitive icons.

Key Features of the ‘Undo’ Button

  • Restore Last Phrase or Text: The feature allows users to undo their last action, whether it’s deleting a single letter, an entire phrase, or a sentence.
  • Persistent Undo Option: Users can undo typed text even if they close and reopen the keyboard. However, exiting the application will reset the memory, and the Undo option will become temporarily inaccessible.
  • Ease of Access: By placing the button in the suggestions row or on the Gboard strip, users can quickly retrieve deleted content without interrupting their workflow.

Why Is This Update Significant?

Gboard has a massive user base due to its pre-installation on most Android devices. While it offers features like multilingual typing, GIFs, and voice input, the lack of an undo option has been a long-standing drawback. This update not only enhances the user experience but also brings Gboard on par with other advanced keyboard apps.

When Will It Be Available?

The ‘Undo’ button is currently in the beta phase and is expected to roll out gradually to all Gboard users in the coming weeks. Users interested in early access can join the Gboard beta program through the Google Play Store.
