FedEx has continued its partnership with The Akshaya Patra Foundation to support the distribution of mid-day meals under the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) Program. The collaboration focuses on improving the efficiency and sustainability of meal delivery through the use of electric vehicles (EVs).
As part of this year’s support, four EVs—two in Panvel, Maharashtra, and two in Delhi—have been deployed to deliver freshly prepared meals to students in government and government-aided schools. Each vehicle is capable of delivering over 250,000 meals annually, depending on the routes covered. This initiative forms part of an ongoing effort to enhance the reach of the PM POSHAN Program while introducing climate-conscious practices in school nutrition logistics.
Since the partnership began in 2022, the initiative has facilitated the delivery of nearly one million mid-day meals across multiple cities. The shift from conventional fuel vehicles to electric mobility has not only reduced carbon emissions but has also lowered operational costs. The savings generated from fuel reduction have allowed The Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide an additional 130,000 meals, effectively expanding the program’s coverage.
According to Suvendu Choudhury, vice president of operations and planning and engineering at FedEx India, the collaboration demonstrates how logistics solutions can support broader social objectives. Dhananjay Ganjoo, CMO of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, emphasized that integrating electric vehicles into meal distribution contributes to a more sustainable approach, addressing both immediate nutritional needs and longer-term environmental considerations.
The initiative represents a step toward aligning school nutrition programs with sustainable mobility practices. By introducing EVs into meal delivery operations, the program seeks to balance operational efficiency, environmental responsibility, and social impact. The focus remains on ensuring that children in government and government-aided schools have consistent access to nutritious meals, which are critical to their overall health and educational development.
Through this collaboration, FedEx and The Akshaya Patra Foundation illustrate how logistics and mobility solutions can intersect with social programs to support children’s nutrition, improve sustainability, and enhance program scalability. The effort highlights the potential for integrating environmentally friendly technologies into public feeding programs, ensuring that the delivery of essential services continues to meet both social and environmental objectives across India.
