The landscape of Marathi cinema is set for a cultural and cinematic treat with the upcoming release of Salabardi. Scheduled to hit theaters on April 17, the film has already sparked significant buzz, primarily due to actor Gashmeer Mahajani’s electrifying portrayal of a traditional Gondhali.
At the heart of Maharashtra’s spiritual heritage is the Gondhal, a traditional folk art performed by devotees who travel between villages to invoke Goddess Jagdamba. Gashmeer Mahajani’s character dives deep into this tradition, blending raw devotion with a gripping narrative. In the recently released song sequence, Mahajani showcases intense body language and dynamic dance movements, all while adorned in authentic traditional attire. The atmosphere created is both mysterious and powerful, setting the tone for the film’s suspenseful plot.
The “Gondhal” sequence is a masterclass in collaboration, featuring some of the biggest names in the Marathi industry. The track is powerfully rendered by the legendary Ajay Gogavale, with rhythmic direction and composition by Padmanabh Gaikwad. The lyrics, thoughtfully penned by Mukund Bhalerao, are brought to life by the choreography of Ashish Patil, who ensures the traditional art form maintains its soul while being cinematically grand. The rhythmic beats of the Sambal (a traditional percussion instrument) drive the sequence, providing a pulse that Gashmeer describes as “goosebump-inducing.”
Salabardi is a suspense thriller set in a remote village where silence hides deadly secrets. Directed by Ramesh Sahebrao Choudhary, the film explores whether Gashmeer’s Gondhali character is merely a performer or a catalyst sent to uncover the truth behind the village’s eerie mysteries. Speaking about the role, Gashmeer Mahajani shared that Gondhal is more than a tradition; it is a powerful expression of devotion that plays a pivotal role in the narrative.
Produced under the banner of Nebula Films by Anil Devde Patil, Dr. Gajanan Jadhav, and Ram Jadhav, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Pooja Sawant, Shashank Shende, Omkar Bhojne, and Bharat Ganeshpure. As the countdown to April 17 begins, Salabardi promises to be a unique blend of cultural richness and edge-of-the-seat thrills, leaving audiences questioning what lies beneath the village’s surface.
