GE Aerospace has officially handed over the first of 99 F404-IN20 engines to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for India’s Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Mk1A. This marks a crucial milestone in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing efforts.

A power boost for Tejas Mk1A
The F404-IN20 is a specially designed variant with the highest thrust in the F404 engine family, making it a critical component for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jet. It features advanced single-crystal turbine blades and a high-flow fan, optimising performance for India’s homegrown aircraft.
Overcoming delays, strengthening the fleet
This delivery comes after a delay of nearly two years due to supply chain disruptions. The agreement between GE Aerospace and HAL, signed in August 2021, aimed for a steady supply of 99 engines, which will now proceed as planned. These engines will power the upgraded Tejas Mk1A aircraft, ensuring the Indian Air Force (IAF) receives an advanced, combat-ready fleet.
Tejas Mk1A: A step towards self-reliance
The Tejas Mk1A is an enhanced version of the original LCA, incorporating modern avionics, radar systems, and electronic warfare capabilities. With the new engine, it is expected to offer superior speed, agility, and operational readiness.
India-GE partnership in defence innovation
GE Aerospace and HAL have a long-standing collaboration, extending beyond the Tejas program. Their partnership includes co-development in aircraft and marine engines, avionics, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services. This ongoing cooperation is vital for strengthening India’s domestic aerospace capabilities.
What’s next?
With the first engine delivered, HAL will integrate it into the Tejas Mk1A, accelerating the aircraft’s production and deployment. The successful completion of this deal will further bolster India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, reducing dependency on foreign defence imports and enhancing the country’s self-reliance in military aviation.
