Hiriyara Habba 2025, organised by Vayah Vikas, concluded on a high note with over 1,000 seniors and their families gathering at St. Joseph’s Institute of Management, Primrose Road. The event offered a full day of celebration, learning, and community interaction, creating a lively and joyous atmosphere.
Dr. Jamuna Ravi, CEO of Vayah Vikas, welcomed attendees by highlighting the importance of creating spaces where seniors can remain active, confident, and purposeful. This was followed by a keynote address by Mr. Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairperson of Vayah Vikas, who spoke about the strength of community in promoting healthy and active ageing. He noted, “80 is the new 60,” encouraging seniors to remain engaged, productive, and socially active.
The event saw the presence of Chinnaswamy Yathiraj, producer of Maggi Pustaka, and senior artist Mysore Ramananda. Mr. Ramananda urged elders to keep their creativity alive and participate actively in society. Attendees also explored various stalls and interactive displays, adding to the festive spirit.
Dr. Alexander Thomas, Founding Board Member of Vayah Vikas, reflected on the organisation’s journey and the growing importance of community-led initiatives for senior well-being. The highlight of the afternoon was the address by Guest of Honour Justice Santosh Hegde, Former Solicitor General of India, who called Hiriyara Habba a reminder that aging is a stage filled with wisdom, dignity, and continued contributions. He also presented the inaugural Vayah Vikas Senior Excellence Awards, recognising outstanding achievements across various fields.
Awardees included:
- Social Service and Community Impact: Rtn. Jayaraman, recognised for his work in eye donation awareness, community learning initiatives, digital access in schools, and senior care.
- Education and Lifelong Learning: Dr. Arvind Kasturi, honoured for his leadership in geriatric care, community health services, research, and training at St. John’s Medical College.
- Arts, Culture and Sports: Ms. Pavithra Muddaya, celebrated for five decades of work sustaining India’s handloom heritage and supporting weavers through Vimor.
Actor Deepak Rai Panaje expressed admiration for the creativity, energy, and enthusiasm shown by seniors throughout the festival.
The day featured vibrant cultural performances, including Karnataka’s folk dance Veeragase, Kathak, and an energetic showcase by the Diana Tholloor Academy of Movement and Drama. The Ekta Hub Experience Zone offered interactive sessions on will writing, legal awareness, cyber security, digital literacy, health, and wellness, helping seniors access important services and information.
The event concluded with a lucky draw, with prizes distributed by the Kantara Team. Ms. Pavithra Reddy, COO of Vayah Vikas, thanked the community, volunteers, families, and supporters for making Hiriyara Habba 2025 a resounding success.
Through this festival, Vayah Vikas reaffirmed its commitment to celebrating seniors as active, valued contributors to society, fostering joy, engagement, and community spirit.
