India has firmly rejected Canada’s recent allegations accusing the country of interfering in foreign elections, describing the claims as unfounded and politically motivated. The Indian government also accused the Canadian government, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, of consistently meddling in India’s internal affairs, particularly concerning issues that affect the country’s sovereignty.
The Canadian Commission’s report insinuated that external forces were involved in influencing India’s electoral process. In response, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) categorically rejected these allegations. Officially commenting on the issue, Randhir Jaiswal, MEA Spokesperson, took to X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“We have seen a report about alleged activities on purportedly consistently interfering in India’s internal affairs. This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organised criminal activities. We reject this report’s insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced.”
Jaiswal’s statement highlights India’s concerns not only about the electoral interference claims but also about the broader issue of illegal migration, which India believes has been facilitated by groups operating within Canada. India’s strong reaction underscores its position against external interference in its domestic matters.
Canada’s Report and India’s Response
India’s rejection of the Canadian Commission’s report comes amid ongoing tensions between the two nations, largely due to Canada’s perceived support of the Khalistani movement, which seeks an independent Sikh state. The Indian government has long expressed dissatisfaction with the Canadian government’s failure to distance itself from pro-secessionist individuals and groups based in Canada.
The report, which lacked concrete evidence, was dismissed by India as an attempt to deflect attention from Canada’s own role in fostering an environment that could potentially destabilise India’s internal security. The MEA’s strong words signal a continued commitment to defending India’s sovereignty against what it views as unwarranted foreign interference.
Impact on India-Canada Relations
This diplomatic confrontation is expected to exacerbate the already strained relations between India and Canada. Over recent years, the two countries have seen growing tensions, particularly regarding the treatment of India’s diaspora in Canada. India has continually called on Canadian officials to take stronger action against the activities of pro-terrorist groups that promote violence and separatism in India.
This latest round of accusations from Canada is seen by Indian officials as another attempt to undermine India’s democratic process. However, India has reiterated its stance that no external power has the right to interfere in the country’s electoral matters or influence its policies.
The MEA’s comments on X reflect the growing frustration in New Delhi with Canada’s handling of these issues and its perceived failure to act on India’s legitimate concerns. As the situation continues to unfold, both countries face the difficult task of addressing these tensions while maintaining their diplomatic relations.
