As India gears up for Diwali 2025, millions of people are set to travel home to celebrate the festival of lights. To ensure a safe and smooth travel experience, Indian Railways has issued a special safety advisory reminding passengers what not to pack in their luggage this festive season.
In its latest announcement, Indian Railways has strictly prohibited the carrying of firecrackers, kerosene oil, gas cylinders, stoves, matchboxes, and cigarettes on trains.
These items are categorized as hazardous and can cause fire or explosions inside coaches, especially during the crowded festive season.
Railway officials emphasize that such materials not only endanger the lives of passengers but also violate the Railway Act, 1989, which permits strict penalties or imprisonment for carrying prohibited items onboard.
Passengers are advised to carry only essential items in small quantities.
Here’s a quick list to remember:
- ❌ Do not carry: Firecrackers, matchsticks, fuel, lighters, or stoves.
- ✅ Safe to carry: Clothes, personal items, food, water bottles, and electronics.
Even small firecrackers like sparklers or flowerpots, which seem harmless, are completely banned on trains and in railway premises during the Diwali period.
To prevent mishaps, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been instructed to step up security across the country.
Surprise checks, luggage screenings, and sniffer dog patrols have been increased at major stations such as:
- New Delhi
- Mumbai Central
- Bandra Terminus
- Surat
- Udhna
- Ahmedabad
Railway officials have also announced the creation of “holding areas” at crowded stations to manage the passenger rush. These holding zones help regulate entry, reduce platform congestion, and make boarding more systematic.
Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Diwali Journey
- Pack light: Avoid carrying heavy luggage or multiple bags.
- Reach early: Arrive at the station at least 45 minutes before departure.
- Avoid carrying valuables: Keep cash and jewelry minimal.
- Stay alert: Report any suspicious packages or smell of fuel immediately to RPF staff.
- Follow announcements: Pay attention to safety messages broadcasted at stations.
The railways also encourages travelers to cooperate with security checks and avoid arguments with staff conducting luggage inspections.
Passengers found carrying banned items could face severe penalties under the Railway Act, including:
- Fines up to ₹1,000
- Imprisonment for up to 3 years
- Seizure of hazardous goods
The RPF has stated that this measure is purely preventive and aims to protect all passengers during the high-travel Diwali season.
With over 2.3 crore passengers expected to travel during Diwali week, this advisory is both timely and essential. The focus is on ensuring that festive enthusiasm does not turn into carelessness.
So, as you board your train this Diwali — carry love and lights, not firecrackers and flames. A little mindfulness can ensure that every journey ends safely at home.
