A severe heatwave is sweeping across Maharashtra. On Monday, Nagpur sizzled at 44°C, one of the highest temperatures recorded in the state this season. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued high temperatures across Vidarbha, Marathwada, and parts of Central Maharashtra over the next two days.
Heatwave grips Vidarbha
Nagpur is at the heart of the heatwave. With mercury levels soaring past 44°C, city authorities have introduced strict measures. To reduce heat-related accidents and stress, traffic signals at 33 key intersections will remain off from 1 PM to 4 PM. This decision comes in response to the increased risk of sunstroke among pedestrians and traffic wardens during peak afternoon hours.
Other districts in Vidarbha, like Chandrapur and Akola, have also reported temperatures above 43°C. In Chandrapur, IMD has forecast a possibility of light rain, but this may only offer momentary relief.
Humidity haunts Mumbai
While Nagpur struggles with dry heat, Mumbai is battling heat and humidity. On Tuesday, the city is expected to witness high moisture levels, making conditions sticky and uncomfortable for residents.
According to weather experts, Mumbai’s “real feel” temperature could cross 40°C, even if the actual reading stays lower. Coastal breezes offer some respite, but the city’s rising humidity has prompted health experts to urge caution, especially for the elderly and children.
Warnings across Maharashtra
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for many districts. Citizens have been advised to stay indoors during peak hours, wear light clothing, and stay hydrated. Farmers, outdoor workers, and delivery personnel are most at risk.In the coming 48 hours, temperatures across Central and North Maharashtra may rise further. The IMD has advised local administrations to prepare for increased power and water demand.
