Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), an Institution of Eminence Deemed-to-be University, celebrated its 33rd Convocation on Friday, underlining its commitment to producing skilled graduates, fostering innovation, and promoting excellence across diverse disciplines. On the first day, 1,648 students received their degrees, including 64 PhD awardees, while four exceptional students were honoured with the prestigious Dr. TMA Pai Gold Medal.
Prof. Dr. Ananya Mukherjee, Vice Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University, Delhi-NCR, was the chief guest. In her convocation address, she emphasised the responsibilities of graduates entering a world rapidly transformed by artificial intelligence (AI). Reflecting on the educational legacies of both institutions, she highlighted AI’s transformative potential alongside the ethical, societal, and technological challenges it poses.
Stressing the importance of human judgment, Prof. Dr. Mukherjee noted, “The prevailing narratives often position AI as either savior or destroyer, replacement or threat. Both extremes miss the power of collaboration. Most importantly, never delegate your judgement. Use AI and computational techniques to inform your decisions, not make them. Reserve moral choices for human wisdom.”
Her address echoed the vision of Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M. D. Venkatesh, VSM (Retd), Vice Chancellor, MAHE, who outlined a forward-looking roadmap centred on innovation, entrepreneurship, and academic excellence. Highlighting the university’s state-of-the-art campus facilities, advanced digital infrastructure, and its 32-megawatt solar plant, he emphasised MAHE’s commitment to sustainability, digital advancement, and the AI revolution, preparing graduates to lead in an evolving world.
In a special segment, Srimathi Vasanti Pai, Trustee of MAHE Trust, and Sri Ramesh Prabhu, Superintendent of Post Offices, Udupi Division, jointly released a commemorative postal cover celebrating the 90th birthday of Dr. Ramdas M. Pai, Chancellor of MAHE.
The convocation also celebrated individual excellence, with four students receiving the Dr. TMA Pai Gold Medal 2025: Ponnamma M. M. (M.Sc Medical Biotechnology, MSLS Manipal), Nikita Marina Saldanha (B.Pharm, MCOPS Manipal), Cyril Biji (M.Sc Biostatistics, PSPH Manipal), and Vindhya S. Badal (B.Sc Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics, MCHP Manipal). The awardees reflected on the significance of the honour, expressing their commitment to contributing meaningfully in their respective fields. They credited their education at Manipal for shaping them into skilled, industry-ready professionals, inspiring them to continue pursuing excellence and innovation in healthcare, pharmaceutical sciences, and community nutrition.
Day One of the 33rd Convocation celebrated the remarkable achievements of all graduates, showcasing MAHE’s dedication to nurturing socially conscious, innovative, and highly skilled professionals ready to shape the future. The ceremony concluded with pride and inspiration as students, families, and faculty looked forward to the second day of convocation, promising further milestones and recognitions.
