The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved a fare hike for auto rickshaws and taxis in the Mumbai metropolitan region. This decision comes in response to demands from auto and taxi unions for higher fares to cover rising operational costs.
The fare for auto-rickshaws will increase by ₹3, raising the minimum fare from ₹23 to ₹26. Similarly, the fare for taxis will also rise by ₹3, with the minimum fare moving from ₹28 to ₹31. The MMRTA will issue a notification soon, outlining the new fare structure and implementation date. This will necessitate the recalibration of meters across the region.
In addition to fare hikes for autos and taxis, the MMRTA discussed reducing fares for AC buses in Thane by 35-50%. This move aims to encourage the use of public transport, making it more affordable for commuters in the region.
The fare hike decision has been met with mixed reactions. Auto and taxi unions have welcomed the move, stating that it will help them cope with increasing fuel prices and maintenance costs. However, commuters have expressed concerns about the additional financial burden, especially amid rising living costs.
The new fare structure is expected to be implemented shortly, following the necessary recalibration of meters. The MMRTA’s decision highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the transport sector in balancing operational costs and commuter affordability.
