Mumbai’s suburban railway network is set for a major expansion, with the government advancing the manufacturing of 238 additional AC local train rakes. The first new rake is expected to be available as early as 2027, while the entire fleet is targeted to be received by 2030. The move comes as the government looks to increase capacity across Mumbai’s suburban railway network and align the arrival of new AC local trains with upcoming infrastructure upgrades.
The plan is part of a proposed investment of around ₹22,000 crore aimed at strengthening Mumbai’s suburban rail network through new corridors, additional railway lines and other infrastructure projects. The capacity-enhancement plan also includes extending platforms to accommodate 15-coach trains and remodelling railway yards to support the growing demand for suburban rail services in the city.
₹22,000 crore plan to expand Mumbai’s suburban network
The government had already approved 238 additional AC suburban train rakes for Mumbai. However, an assessment of the procurement process indicated that series production could take around three years to begin. Under the earlier timeline, the first rake was expected only in 2030, while the complete fleet could have taken until 2034 to arrive.
To avoid the delay, the government has now decided to manufacture the AC local train rakes simultaneously at three Railway production units. The 238 rakes will be manufactured at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala and Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Raebareli. Manufacturing the rakes at multiple facilities is expected to accelerate production and allow the new trains to reach Mumbai much earlier than under the previous schedule.
With the revised manufacturing strategy, the first of the 238 new AC local rakes is expected to be available in 2027, while the complete fleet is targeted for receipt by 2030. The accelerated rollout is also being planned alongside the completion of new corridors, additional railway lines and other capacity-enhancement projects, ensuring that the increase in train capacity is supported by the required railway infrastructure.
MRVC CMD Shri Vilas S Wadekar said the revised approach is aimed at aligning the induction of AC rakes with the commissioning of new corridors, additional lines and other capacity-enhancement works. Describing the Mumbai local train as the “lifeline of Mumbai”, Wadekar said the accelerated manufacturing plan would help bring the benefits of AC suburban travel to Mumbaikars substantially earlier.
What this means for Mumbai commuters
The simultaneous expansion of railway infrastructure and faster induction of AC local trains is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s suburban rail network. The initiative is aimed at providing commuters with a more comfortable and higher-capacity suburban railway system while addressing the growing demand for local train services.
For daily commuters, the addition of 238 AC local rakes could significantly expand air-conditioned suburban services across Mumbai in the coming years. The development of new corridors, additional railway lines and upgraded platforms is also expected to support the increased number of trains.
With the first new AC local rake now targeted for 2027 and the complete fleet expected by 2030, Mumbai commuters could see a major expansion of AC suburban services much sooner than originally planned.
