Mumbai and several other cities in Maharashtra are set to introduce bike taxis, making daily travel easier and more affordable. This new transport option is expected to provide a cost-effective alternative for commuters while creating thousands of jobs.
Low-cost rides for Mumbai commuters
Bike taxis will be available at an initial fare of just ₹3 per kilometre. This makes them cheaper than auto-rickshaws and cabs, offering a quick and budget-friendly travel option, especially for short distances.
Who can drive a bike taxi?
To operate a bike taxi, a rider must have:
- A valid driving licence.
- Commercial registration for the bike.
- Necessary insurance coverage.
The government aims to regulate bike taxis to ensure safety for both passengers and riders.
Up to 20,000 jobs expected
This initiative is expected to create nearly 20,000 jobs for riders across Maharashtra. Many unemployed youth and gig workers could benefit from this opportunity, boosting the local economy.
Safety and regulations
To ensure passenger safety, bike taxi services will follow strict guidelines:
- Riders must wear helmets, and passengers will also be provided with helmets.
- A GPS tracking system will be mandatory for registered bike taxis.
- Surge pricing may not be allowed to keep fares affordable.
When will bike taxis start in Mumbai?
The official rollout date is yet to be announced, but bike taxis are expected to hit the roads soon. Once launched, they will provide a faster way to navigate Mumbai’s congested traffic while promoting last-mile connectivity.
