OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, will open its first India office in New Delhi later this year. The move highlights India’s growing role in the global AI landscape, driven by a fourfold surge in ChatGPT users over the past year.
India stands as ChatGPT’s second-largest market by users, trailing only the U.S., and ranks among the top five developer markets worldwide. The country also boasts the largest student user base for ChatGPT globally. To tap into this potential, OpenAI has established OpenAI India Private Limited and begun hiring a local team to strengthen ties with governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
The company’s expansion aligns with India’s push for AI adoption through the IndiaAI Mission. “India has the talent, ecosystem, and government support to lead in AI,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s co-founder and CEO. The new office will focus on making advanced AI accessible and building solutions tailored for India.
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Go, a subscription plan priced at ₹399 per month with UPI integration, designed for Indian users. The company also launched an AI literacy program, OpenAI Academy, in partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Enhanced support for Indic languages in the latest GPT-5 model further caters to India’s diverse linguistic needs.
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the move, stating, “OpenAI’s presence supports our vision for inclusive AI that benefits every citizen.” OpenAI will host its first Education Summit in India this month, followed by a Developer Day later this year to engage the country’s vibrant tech community.
The company has started hiring for sales roles in India, with three openings listed. This follows the appointment of Pragya Misra to lead public policy and partnerships in 2024. While the exact location of the New Delhi office remains undisclosed, OpenAI’s commitment signals a strategic push into one of its fastest-growing markets.
