Russia’s latest large-scale attack on Ukraine has intensified international concern after a hypersonic Oreshnik missile reportedly struck close to the European Union and NATO border. The development has raised fears among Western nations that the war may be moving into a more dangerous phase, with higher risks of regional escalation.
The missile strike was part of a massive overnight assault on Kyiv, during which Russia launched around 36 missiles and more than 240 drones. Ukrainian air defence systems intercepted many of the incoming threats, but several missiles and drones still managed to hit targets across the capital. The attacks caused damage to buildings and infrastructure, and emergency services were deployed across the city.
The reported use of the Oreshnik missile has drawn special attention. Defence analysts describe it as a hypersonic weapon capable of travelling at extremely high speeds, which makes it harder to track and intercept compared to conventional missiles. While Russia has used advanced missile systems earlier in the war, launching such a weapon close to NATO territory is seen as a strong and deliberate signal.
Although the missile did not cross into NATO airspace, its proximity to the alliance’s border has unsettled Western governments. Officials and experts warn that attacks near NATO territory increase the risk of miscalculation or unintended consequences, especially given the already tense relations between Russia and the West.
Ukrainian authorities said the attack targeted both civilian areas and key infrastructure in Kyiv. Power and heating facilities were affected in parts of the city, adding to the hardship faced by residents during winter. Several explosions were reported, and debris from intercepted missiles caused fires in some neighbourhoods.
Russia has defended its actions by claiming the strikes were aimed at military and strategic targets. Ukraine, however, has rejected these claims, stating that civilian areas were clearly affected. Western nations have strongly condemned the attack, repeating calls for Russia to stop targeting Ukrainian cities.
The launch of the Oreshnik missile near EU and NATO borders highlights how the conflict is becoming more complex and risky. As the war continues, the use of advanced weapons and attacks close to sensitive borders is likely to keep European security officials on high alert. Many observers believe preventing further escalation will require renewed diplomatic efforts alongside continued support for Ukraine.
