For people living with joint pain, spinal problems or sports injuries, finding the right specialist is an important step towards recovery. Treatment may involve medication, physiotherapy or surgery, depending on the condition. A new partnership between Nivam Orthopaedics and Surya Hospitals aims to bring specialised bone and joint care to more parts of Mumbai.
Founded by orthopaedic surgeons Dr Nilen Shah and Dr Manan Shah, Nivam Orthopaedics has partnered with Surya Hospitals to develop a network of specialised orthopaedic centres across the city. According to the announcement, centres in Santacruz and Chembur are already operational, while further expansion is planned.
A new centre in Kandivali is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, followed by plans to expand into South Mumbai.
Treatment Beyond the Operating Theatre
The proposed network will address a range of orthopaedic conditions, including joint disorders, spinal problems, sports injuries and complex bone and joint conditions.
Services are expected to include joint replacement, revision surgery for patients who need further treatment after an earlier joint replacement, robotic-assisted procedures and minimally invasive surgery. These options may be considered depending on a patient’s diagnosis, medical condition and treatment needs.
However, orthopaedic care does not always begin or end with surgery. Some patients may benefit from non-surgical approaches, including medication, physiotherapy and other forms of conservative treatment.
The partnership says it will prioritise appropriate treatment decisions, with surgery recommended only when medically necessary. This is an important consideration because the most suitable treatment can vary from one patient to another.
Why Rehabilitation Matters
Recovery is an essential part of orthopaedic treatment. Even after a successful operation, patients may need guided exercises, physiotherapy and follow-up assessments to rebuild strength and improve movement.
For someone recovering from a knee replacement, for example, rehabilitation can help support mobility and everyday activities. Patients with sports injuries may also require a structured recovery plan before returning to their usual activities.
The centres aim to connect different stages of care, from diagnosis and treatment planning to surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Coordinating these services may help patients navigate their treatment journey more easily.
Expanding Access Across Mumbai
The partnership brings Nivam Orthopaedics’ specialist services together with Surya Hospitals’ existing healthcare infrastructure. Its stated aim is to make specialised orthopaedic treatment more accessible to patients in different parts of Mumbai.
Dr Bhupendra S. Awasthi, Founder, Chairman and Managing Director of Surya Hospitals, said the partnership aims to improve access to orthopaedic services and support patients throughout treatment and recovery.
The planned expansion could give patients in areas such as Kandivali another option for accessing specialist care closer to home. However, the actual benefit will depend on the availability of services, clinical teams and facilities at each centre.
Keeping Patients at the Centre
Joint pain and mobility problems can affect work, family responsibilities and everyday independence. Choosing treatment therefore involves more than deciding whether an operation is needed. Patients also need clear information, suitable treatment options and support during recovery.
The Nivam Orthopaedics and Surya Hospitals partnership places emphasis on this wider treatment journey. As the network expands, its value will depend on how effectively it delivers appropriate care, explains treatment choices and supports patients beyond the operating theatre.
For patients, the central message is simple: good orthopaedic care should focus not only on treating a condition, but also on helping people regain movement and return to their daily lives.
