Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed Pongal celebrations on Tuesday, describing the harvest festival as a global occasion that brings people together across cultures and countries. He said Pongal reflects gratitude towards nature, the Sun and the farming community, while also strengthening social bonds.
The Prime Minister conveyed Pongal greetings in Tamil and other languages, noting that the festival is now celebrated by people across the world. He said Pongal symbolises hard work, prosperity and harmony, values that remain relevant beyond regional boundaries.
Mr Modi underlined that Tamil culture is not limited to one state or community but is a shared heritage of India and humanity. He referred to ancient Tamil literature and traditions, which place farmers at the centre of life and civilisation. According to him, agriculture has always been the backbone of society, a belief deeply rooted in Tamil philosophy.
Speaking about India’s wider festive season, the Prime Minister noted that several harvest festivals such as Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu are celebrated around the same time across different regions. He extended his best wishes to all Indians and members of the Indian diaspora marking these festivals.
Reflecting on his recent engagements, Mr Modi spoke about visiting important cultural and spiritual sites linked to Tamil history. He recalled visiting the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple, participating in the Kashi Tamil Sangam, and visiting the Pamban Bridge region near Rameswaram. He said these experiences deepened his understanding of Tamil heritage and its national importance.
The Prime Minister also stressed the need to live in harmony with nature. He said respect for the environment should become a daily practice rather than a symbolic idea. He highlighted the government’s focus on empowering farmers and promoting sustainable farming methods that protect soil, water and natural resources.
Mr Modi referred to initiatives aimed at encouraging environmentally responsible lifestyles, including Mission LIFE, tree plantation drives and water conservation projects. He said these efforts align closely with the spirit of Pongal, which celebrates the bond between humans and nature.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister wished happiness, prosperity and unity to everyone celebrating Pongal and other harvest festivals. He said India’s cultural traditions and respect for nature can guide the nation towards a balanced and sustainable future.
