President Droupadi Murmu took part in the celebrations of Angola’s 50th Independence Day on 11 November 2025, marking a significant moment in India’s growing engagement with Africa. Invited by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, she attended the grand national ceremony held at Praça da República in Luanda, where she witnessed the impressive military parade and cultural performances showcasing Angola’s rich heritage and resilience.
During her visit, President Murmu congratulated the people and government of Angola on completing five decades of independence and reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its historical and friendly relations with the nation. India and Angola share long-standing ties, particularly in trade, energy, and capacity building, and her presence at this milestone anniversary symbolised India’s support for Africa’s progress and development aspirations.
Following the celebrations in Angola, President Murmu travelled to Botswana, continuing the final leg of her two-nation African tour. Her arrival at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone was marked by a warm ceremonial welcome and a guard of honour. She was received by President Duma Gideon Boko of Botswana, marking a historic occasion as this is the first-ever state visit by an Indian Head of State to the country.
The visit underscores India’s deepening partnerships across Africa, focusing on cooperation in trade, education, healthcare, and technology. It also reflects New Delhi’s broader vision of enhancing South–South cooperation and building stronger people-to-people connections across the continent. President Murmu’s engagements in Angola and Botswana reaffirm India’s role as a trusted development partner and a steadfast friend of Africa in its journey toward peace, prosperity, and sustainable growth.
