Rahul Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cancel offshore mining tenders. He warns of threats to marine life and fisherfolk livelihoods.
In a letter, Gandhi condemns the government’s decision. He highlights the lack of environmental assessments and stakeholder consultations. The tenders cover areas in Kerala, Gujarat, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
Gandhi points to the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2023. He notes strong objections due to environmental and socio-economic concerns. Studies indicate risks like harm to marine ecosystems and depletion of fish stocks.
The Ministry of Mines invited tenders for 13 offshore blocks. This move sparked protests among coastal communities. Three blocks are near Kollam, a key fish breeding area. Another three are off the Great Nicobar Islands, a marine biodiversity hotspot.
Gandhi urges immediate revocation of these tenders. He calls for scientific studies and stakeholder consultations before proceeding. The goal is to protect marine ecosystems and coastal livelihoods.
