Justice Surya Kant’s rise to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India is a story of determination, discipline and steady hard work. Born in a middle-class family in Hisar, Haryana, he did not come from a long line of lawyers or judges. Instead, he built his career step by step, relying on merit, dedication, and a clear sense of purpose.
Justice Surya Kant completed his studies in Hisar and later pursued law. He began his legal practice in the district courts of Hisar, where he quickly earned a reputation for clear arguments, professionalism and honesty. His talent was soon noticed, and he moved to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where his legal work earned further recognition.
His abilities led to a major breakthrough in 2000, when he was appointed Advocate General of Haryana, the youngest person to hold that post at the time. This marked a turning point in his career, showing how far hard work and skill could take a lawyer who started in a small town district court.
In 2004, he was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Over the years, he delivered several important judgments and became known for his balanced approach and sensitivity towards public issues. His work continued to stand out, and in 2018, he was appointed the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. His time there further strengthened his reputation for fairness and administrative leadership.
Justice Surya Kant reached the Supreme Court in 2019, where he was part of several major constitutional cases. His contributions included hearings related to Article 370, the sedition law, the Pegasus spyware matter, and issues involving gender justice and electoral transparency. His wide experience and strong understanding of law made him one of the senior-most judges of the court.
On 24 November 2025, he was sworn in as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. His journey from a modest home in Hisar to the highest judicial office stands as an inspiring example for young lawyers and students across the country. It shows that success in the legal field does not depend on background, but on consistent effort, integrity and a commitment to justice.
Justice Surya Kant’s career is a reminder that the Indian judiciary continues to provide space for merit and hard work to shine. His story encourages a new generation to believe that they too can rise to the top with dedication and discipline.
