India has taken a big step towards self-reliance in technology with the launch of BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G network. On September 27, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated this new network from Odisha. This launch is not just about faster internet; it is a symbol of India building its own technology and reducing dependence on foreign telecom equipment.
BSNL, India’s state-owned telecom company, has been serving the country for decades. With this launch, it has installed over 97,500 mobile towers, including 92,600 4G towers. The network uses indigenous technology, developed entirely in India, making it a true Swadeshi initiative. Prime Minister Modi said that the launch shows India’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) in digital and telecom sectors. By using Indian technology, India is also ensuring data security, affordability, and accessibility for its citizens.
The Swadeshi 4G network is important for many reasons. Firstly, using Indian technology reduces reliance on foreign equipment, strengthening India’s digital security. Secondly, the project involves an investment of around ₹37,000 crore, which helps create jobs and boosts local manufacturing. Thirdly, with thousands of new towers, even remote and rural areas will now have better mobile and internet connectivity, promoting digital inclusion. Lastly, the 4G network is designed to upgrade to 5G easily, ensuring India stays ahead in global digital technology.
Odisha played a key role in this launch. The first towers and the network’s inauguration happened in the state, showing how regional infrastructure contributes to India’s technological growth. This will also encourage other states to support digital initiatives and improve local telecom services.
This Swadeshi 4G network is more than just technology; it represents a vision of self-reliance, showing that India can develop its own critical infrastructure. From design to manufacturing, the entire project is homegrown, aligning with the government’s goal of making India a global digital power.
For ordinary citizens, this launch brings faster internet, better coverage, and more reliable services. Students, businesses, and government services will all benefit from improved connectivity, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.
The launch of BSNL’s Swadeshi 4G network is a milestone for India. It is a step towards technological independence, stronger national security, and inclusive growth. With this initiative, India is not just expanding its telecom services but also asserting its sovereignty in digital technology. The Swadeshi 4G network shows that India is ready to lead in technology while keeping its self-reliance and security at the forefront.
