Mumbai, October 11, 2025:
The K J Somaiya School of Languages and Literature, in collaboration with the Sane Guruji Rashtriya Smarak Trust – Antarbharati Translation Resource Center, is set to host a One-Day National Seminar on “The Relevance of Translation from Linguistic, Social and Cultural Perspectives” at the Somaiya Vidyavihar Campus, Mumbai.
The seminar, to be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., aims to highlight how translation in India goes far beyond words serving as a cultural bridge connecting the nation’s diverse linguistic and regional identities.
The inaugural session will feature Dr. Maya Pandit, former Professor at EFL University and a renowned translator, delivering the keynote address on “Social and Academic Dimensions of Translation.” The event will be inaugurated with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony followed by a welcome address.
In the plenary session, titled “Translation: A Social and Cultural Dialogue,” distinguished speakers will include Prof. Shobha Naik (Chairperson), Shri Prafulla Shiledar, Dr. Hemant Rajopadhye, and Shri Vinod Patel — representing a confluence of perspectives from literature, journalism, and Sanskrit studies.
A highlight of the seminar will be a special interactive session with award-winning translator Dr. Abhijeet Ranadive, discussing his Marathi translation of Albert Camus’ French classic “L’Étranger (The Stranger or The Outsider)”. The conversation will be moderated by Ms. Karuna Gokhale and Mr. Ganesh Matkari.
The day will culminate with the Balshastri Jambhekar Translation Award presentation to Dr. Abhijeet Ranadive, accompanied by remarks from Mr. Nikhilesh Chitre and a felicitation by Dr. Maya Pandit.
Open to students, researchers, faculty members, and all language enthusiasts, the seminar promises a vibrant platform for intellectual exchange and cross-cultural dialogue.
