The 270th session of the Rajya Sabha India’s Upper House of Parliament was formally inaugurated by Vice‑President Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan on Thursday. The opening address set the tone for the upcoming budget session and highlighted Parliament’s key role in shaping India’s future.
In his inaugural speech, the Vice‑President greeted all members of the House and expressed satisfaction at India’s rapid economic growth. He noted India’s emergence as one of the world’s fastest‑growing major economies and highlighted its steady progress towards becoming the third‑largest economy globally, reinforcing the country’s growing global influence.
Shri Radhakrishnan reminded members of their crucial role in guiding India’s economic direction through thoughtful legislation and constructive debate. He encouraged the Rajya Sabha to build on the momentum from the President’s address to Parliament, which outlined the nation’s priorities for the coming year.
During this session, which will span approximately 30 sittings, the House will examine the Union Budget 2026–27, review key government proposals, and deliberate on important bills. The Vice‑President emphasised that this legislative work should reflect the aspirations of the people.
In addition to plenary work, several parliamentary standing committees will continue detailed scrutiny of ministries’ demand for grants. Shri Radhakrishnan urged members to participate actively in both House debates and committee discussions to ensure thorough oversight of government policies and programmes.
Highlighting the importance of democratic traditions, the Vice‑President called on members to maintain parliamentary decorum and discipline. He stressed that robust debate and respectful exchange of ideas are essential to India’s vibrant democracy.
Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, Shri Radhakrishnan reminded members of the values of discipline and knowledge that form the foundation of India’s democratic ethos. He appealed to all members across parties to collaborate in making the session productive and constructive, contributing to India’s vision of becoming a self‑reliant and developed nation.
