Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is taking strict action against illegal footpath ramps. These ramps, built by societies and commercial buildings, block pedestrian movement. The crackdown is part of BMC’s plan to improve footpaths across the city.
BMC teams are demolishing unauthorised ramps during ongoing road concreting projects. Many buildings use these ramps to connect entrances with roads. Officials say such structures violate footpath usage rules. Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar stated that pedestrians must not face obstacles while walking.
Some residents claim the demolition is causing inconvenience. They argue that ramps help vehicles access buildings smoothly. However, BMC insists that public pathways cannot be obstructed. To resolve concerns, the civic body offers two solutions. Buildings can either level their footpaths while keeping them walkable or construct internal ramps up to footpath height.
If societies raise specific concerns, BMC will assess them individually. The goal is to maintain clear footpaths without compromising accessibility. The removal drive will continue across Mumbai to ensure pedestrian-friendly streets.
