India’s railway stations are getting a much-needed facelift. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 103 revamped railway stations were recently inaugurated across the country. The goal: modern, passenger-friendly stations with better facilities and local flair.
The redevelopment aims to turn old, crowded stations into clean, green, and tech-enabled transit hubs. It’s not just about cosmetics each upgraded station now promises more comfort, safety, and convenience.
What is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme?
Launched in 2023, this scheme targets the long-term transformation of over 1,300 railway stations. It focuses on upgrading infrastructure and enhancing passenger experience. Stations are selected based on passenger traffic and strategic importance.
The scheme takes a phased approach to development. It includes:
- Modern waiting areas
- Clean and large toilets
- Segregated entry and exit gates
- Free Wi-Fi and LED lighting
- Executive lounges
- Local culture-themed architecture
The scheme is led by the Ministry of Railways. It integrates sustainability, smart technology, and universal accessibility.
Major stations that got a makeover
The 103 newly revamped stations span multiple states and union territories. Some prominent ones include:
- Ayodhya (Uttar Pradesh)
- Kozhikode (Kerala)
- Valsad (Gujarat)
- Muzaffarpur (Bihar)
- Secunderabad (Telangana)
- Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh)
- Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh)
Each redesign highlights regional culture through murals, artwork, and design. The upgraded spaces now resemble modern airport terminals with improved signages, food courts, and digital display systems.
Why this matters to passengers
These changes are not just cosmetic. The new features include:
- Smoother passenger flow
- Better lighting and security
- More platforms with ramps and lifts
- Water-saving and solar-powered systems
- Digitised announcements and CCTV coverage
Such upgrades promise less chaos, more comfort, and enhanced safety especially for elderly and disabled passengers.
Economic and social boost
The scheme also creates local job opportunities during construction and operations. It helps boost tourism and regional business by making stations more welcoming.
By embracing local culture and blending it with smart infrastructure, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is building future-ready transit hubs while keeping India’s heritage alive.
This is just the beginning. Over 1,200 more stations are on the roadmap. The Railways aims to complete these in phases, gradually transforming the entire network.
India’s journey toward modern rail travel has begun—one station at a time.
