India’s leading dairy cooperative, Amul, is making a major move in the eastern market by setting up the world’s largest curd manufacturing facility in Kolkata. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which owns the Amul brand, has announced an investment of ₹600 crore for this ambitious project.
The plant will have an initial milk processing capacity of 10 lakh litres per day, with provisions to scale up operations based on demand. It is expected to be equipped with cutting edge dairy technology to ensure high-quality production standards. The facility will also focus on producing a wide range of dairy products, including curd, buttermilk, lassi, and paneer, catering to the growing consumer base in West Bengal and neighbouring states.
This investment aligns with Amul’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in eastern India, where demand for dairy products has been rising. The Kolkata plant is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect job opportunities in the region, boosting both the local economy and the dairy industry.
Speaking about the expansion, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, highlighted that the project is part of Amul’s long term vision to increase milk production and provide quality dairy products at affordable prices. The facility will also contribute to strengthening the supply chain and supporting local dairy farmers.
With this investment, Amul is set to revolutionise the curd manufacturing sector by increasing efficiency and meeting the growing demand for fermented dairy products. The Kolkata plant’s large-scale production capacity will not only help in market expansion but also reinforce India’s status as a global leader in dairy production.
As the project progresses, industry experts anticipate that Amul’s move will encourage further investments in the region, paving the way for a stronger and more self-reliant dairy industry in India.
