The Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS), run by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is about to undergo a complete digital overhaul with the launch of a new Health Management Information System (HMIS). The updated platform, designed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), will be officially live from 28 April 2025.
The upgrade comes after nearly two decades of using outdated software, first introduced in 2005. The old system no longer meets the demands of modern cybersecurity norms or digital expectations. The new HMIS aims to streamline services, cut delays, and offer a more transparent and user-friendly experience for millions of CGHS beneficiaries across the country.
To facilitate the switch, all CGHS services, including those at Wellness Centres, will be temporarily closed on 26 April. This one-day suspension will allow for final data migration and system checks.
Key Features of the New System
PAN-Based Identification
Every beneficiary will now be assigned a unique ID linked to their PAN. This is expected to stop duplicate entries and ease the process of verifying eligibility.
Automated Contribution Verification
Contribution payments will be auto-verified through an integrated system with Bharat Kosh. Manual inputs and option selection will no longer be needed, helping reduce payment errors and refund issues.
Pre-Payment Application Checks
Under the new system, card applications will be reviewed before payments are made. This helps applicants confirm their eligibility and know the exact contribution amount in advance.
Fully Online Card Modification
Changes like dependent status updates, transfers, or shifts from serving to retired status can now be handled entirely online.
Live Updates and Alerts
SMS and email alerts will keep users informed at every stage of their application process. This reduces the need for in-person follow-ups.
Mandatory Password Reset
As a cybersecurity measure, all existing users will be asked to reset their passwords on their first login.
Department Validation Using Salary Codes
Departments will now be verified using Pay and Accounts Office (PAO) and Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) codes, as per the employee’s salary slip.
Upgraded Mobile App
The CGHS mobile app for both Android and iOS has been re-developed. Users can now access their digital card, track application status, book appointments, get referrals, and reach helpdesks directly through the app.
Transition to New Portal
From 28 April, the existing CGHS websites (www.cghs.gov.in and www.cghs.nic.in) will be discontinued. All online services will be available only on the new platform: www.cghs.mohfw.gov.in. Beneficiaries are advised to use this site for applications, updates, grievance redressal, and service access.
Medical records and pharmacy histories will be securely transferred to the new system. The migration complies with national data privacy regulations, ensuring no loss of records.
Guidance for Beneficiaries and Departments
- From 28 April, contributions can only be made through the CGHS website.
- Payments through Bharat Kosh will be discontinued.
- Applications submitted before 28 April but not paid for by 27 April will be void and need to be resubmitted on the new platform.
- All adult beneficiaries are asked to link their PAN to their CGHS ID.
- Existing cards will remain valid during and after the transition.
Support resources, including helpdesk contact and user manuals, are available on the website and app. Additional Director offices and CGHS Card Sections will continue to assist with any queries or support needs.
