Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time IPL champions, faced a challenging 2025 season, finishing at the bottom of the points table. A significant factor in their underwhelming performance was the underachievement of several high-profile signings. Here are three acquisitions that didn’t meet expectations:
1. Rachin Ravindra—The Underwhelming Opener
New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra was brought in to strengthen CSK’s top order. However, he struggled to adapt to the pace of the IPL, managing only 191 runs in 8 matches at a strike rate of 128.18. His inability to provide aggressive starts put pressure on the middle order.
2. Rahul Tripathi—A Misfiring Middle Order
Rahul Tripathi, acquired for ₹3.4 crore, was expected to add stability to the middle order. Unfortunately, he scored just 55 runs in five matches, with a strike rate of 96.49. His lack of form contributed to CSK’s struggles in setting and chasing competitive totals.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin—Spin Without Sting
Veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was signed for ₹9.75 crore to bolster the spin department. Contrary to expectations, he managed only five wickets in seven games, with an economy rate of 9.3. His performance fell short, especially on spin-friendly pitches like Chepauk.
These signings, among others, highlight the challenges CSK faced in team composition and performance during the 2025 IPL season.
