Today marks the start of the awe inspiring Maha Kumbh 2025, as millions of devotees gathered at the iconic Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. This sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers is a site of profound spiritual importance, drawing pilgrims from every corner of India and the world. The ceremonial “Shahi Snan”, or royal bath, set the tone for this grand celebration of faith and tradition.

A Celebration of Faith and Heritage

This year, Mahakumbh is anticipated to welcome an astounding 450 million visitors over six weeks, showcasing the richness of India’s spiritual and cultural legacy. By 7:30 am on the first day alone, an estimated 3.5 million devotees had already taken the holy dip at Sangam.

Music Meets Spirituality

What’s a celebration without music? Adding a soulful touch to the divine atmosphere, celebrated artists Shankar Mahadevan and Mohit Chauhan are set to perform. Shankar Mahadevan will grace the opening day, while Mohit Chauhan will bring his melodious magic to the festival’s conclusion, merging music seamlessly with spirituality.

Safety First: High-Tech Security Measures

Managing such an enormous gathering is no small task, but Mahakumbh 2025 is setting a benchmark with cutting edge security systems.

  • Drones on duty: Over 113 underwater drones, capable of monitoring up to 100 metres underwater, are ensuring safety at Sangam, while tethered drones keep a close watch on crowd movements from the skies.
  • AI-enabled surveillance: A network of 2,700 AI-powered cameras with facial recognition and real time monitoring has been installed at key entry points.
  • Cyber vigilance: A team of 56 cyber experts is working tirelessly, supported by cyber help desks set up across the city.
  • Ground force: The formidable “impenetrable security chakravyuh” comprises 40,000 police officers and cybercrime specialists, ensuring the safety of every attendee.

Welcoming millions of devotees means ensuring their comfort, and the organisers have gone all out:

Accommodation: 150,000 tents have been erected, along with expanded sanitation facilities and thousands of additional toilets.

Power supply: 450,000 new electricity connections have been installed, providing a power supply that exceeds the monthly consumption of over 100,000 urban homes.
