Turnover of Rs. 1,55,419 crores in commodity futures and Rs. 18,61,981 crores in options during the week: 343 points movement in Bulldex futures
India’s leading commodity derivatives exchange, Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) has recorded turnover of Rs. 20,17,412.99 crore in various futures & option contracts for commodities listed at MCX during the week of January 10 to 16, 2025. A movement of 343 points was seen in the January futures of the precious metals index Bulldex.
In precious metal futures, gold and silver witnessed a total turnover of Rs. 81,217.56 crore in 9,03,896 trades on MCX. In gold contracts, MCX Gold February futures per 10 gram opened the week at Rs. 78,302, touched an intra-day high of Rs. 79,270 and a low of Rs. 77,965 during the week and ended the week at Rs. 79,226, up by Rs. 1,122. Against this, Gold-Guinea January contract per 8 gram jumped Rs. 822 to Rs. 63,703 and Gold-Petal January contract per 1 gram rose Rs. 105 to Rs. 7,852. Gold-Mini February futures opened at Rs. 78,389 per 10 gram and rose by Rs. 1,092 to close at Rs. 79,160. In Silver futures, Silver March futures per 1 kg opened at Rs. 91,896 at the beginning of the week and touched a high of Rs. 93,660 and a low of Rs. 89,910 during the week intra-day and closed at Rs. 92,803 at the end of the week, up by Rs. 1092. Silver-Mini February contract rose by Rs. 1065 to close at Rs. 92,758 and Silver-Micro February contract rose by Rs. 1,059 to close at Rs. 92,755.
In metals futures, MCX witnessed a turnover of Rs. 13,339.36 crore in 1,04,118 trades. Aluminium January futures rose by Rs. 10.15 to Rs. 252.55 per 1 kg and Zinc January futures rose by Rs. 2.55 to Rs. 274. Against this, Copper January contract rose by Rs. 12.65 to Rs. 837.65 and Lead January contract rose by Rs. 1.40 to Rs. 178.
Energy segment futures witnessed a total trading volume of Rs. 60,842.49 crore in 12,42,715 trades on MCX. Crude Oil January futures opened at Rs. 6,367 at the beginning of the week, touched an intra-day high of Rs. 6,958 and a low of Rs. 6,363 during the week and closed the week at Rs. 6,833, up Rs. 461 per barrel, while Natural Gas January futures rose Rs. 30.30 to close at Rs. 356.30 per 1 MMBTU.
In Agricultural Commodities, MCX witnessed a turnover of Rs. 19.90 crore in 432 trades. Cotton Candy January futures opened at Rs. 54,880 per candy, touched an intra-day high of Rs. 56,000 and a low of Rs. 54,100 during the week and closed the week at Rs. 54,220, down Rs. 370. Mentha oil futures January contract declined by Rs. 23.20 per 1 kg to Rs. 924.70.
In terms of trading, among precious metals on MCX, 49,230 kg of gold futures worth Rs. 38,787.27 crore were traded in 1,72,961 trades and 4,603.884 tonnes of silver futures worth Rs. 42,430.29 crore were traded in 7,30,935 trades. In the energy segment, 1,88,21,600 barrels of crude oil futures worth Rs. 12,628.52 crore were traded in 1,37,209 trades and 1,18,94,68,750 MMBTU of natural gas futures worth Rs. 40,237 crore were traded in 4,90,073 trades. In agricultural commodities, cotton candy futures traded 6,288 candies worth Rs. 8.59 crore in 128 trades, mentha oil contracts traded 121 tonnes worth Rs. 11.31 crore in 304 trades.
Open interest at the end of the week stood at 20,782 kg in gold futures and 1,046.158 tonnes in silver futures, 1491400 barrels in crude oil and 2,39,86,250 MMBTU in natural gas and 21,648 candies in cotton candy and 182 tonnes in mentha oil.
In index futures, 131 lots worth Rs. 12.54 crore were traded in 130 trades in Bulldex futures on MCX during the week. Open interest was at 70 lots in Bulldex futures. Bulldex January futures opened at 19,090, moved up 258 points to reach 19,274 with a movement of 343 points.
Options on Futures recorded a notional turnover of Rs. 18,61,981.14 crore in 1,48,19,122 trades on MCX. Call and put options of gold traded for Rs. 1,33,483.31 crore, call and put options of silver and silver-mini traded for Rs. 21,663.33 crore. In the energy segment options, call and put options of crude oil traded for Rs. 15,30,986.36 crore, and call and put options of natural gas traded for Rs. 1,54,580.37 crore.
