Producer Ravi Bhagchandka is set to bring the critically acclaimed Marathi film Funral to Hindi audiences with an official adaptation currently in the writing stage. Known for supporting emotionally rich and meaningful stories, Ravi believes the film deserves to reach a wider audience while preserving the emotional depth and cultural authenticity that made the original so special.
The National Award-winning Marathi film gained immense appreciation for its sensitive and refreshing portrayal of life, death and human relationships. Unlike conventional stories that approach death only through grief and sorrow, Funral explored the subject with warmth, humanity and emotional reflection, leaving a lasting impact on viewers.
Speaking about what inspired him to adapt the film, Ravi shared that the emotional honesty of the story immediately connected with him. According to him, the universality of the theme is what makes the narrative powerful across cultures and languages.
“What really stayed with me about Funral was its emotional honesty and the universality of its theme. Death is something every human being experiences in some form, but cinema rarely explores it with warmth, celebration and humanity,” Ravi said.
He explained that the film stood apart because it presented death not merely as a moment of loss, but also as an opportunity to reflect on life, relationships and shared memories. The story, while deeply rooted in Marathi culture and local sensibilities, carried emotions that could connect with audiences anywhere in the world.
“The film had a very unique emotional perspective. It looked at how a passing can also become a moment of reflection, connection and even celebration of a life lived,” he added.
Ravi further stated that stories which rise above language and regional boundaries are often the most powerful ones. He believes Funral has exactly that kind of emotional reach.
“Despite being deeply rooted in Marathi culture and sensibilities, the emotion felt completely universal. That’s usually the sign of a powerful story — when it travels beyond language and region,” he said. “I felt this was a story that deserved to reach a wider audience in Hindi while still retaining its soul and authenticity.”
At a time when regional cinema is increasingly influencing mainstream Indian storytelling, Ravi feels there is no single formula for discovering meaningful stories. According to him, genuine emotional connection remains the most important factor, whether the story originates from a book, a script, an original idea or an adaptation.
“I don’t think there’s any fixed formula for where a story should come from. It can begin with an original idea, a ready script, a book or even an adaptation. For me, what matters most is the emotional connection,” Ravi explained. “At the end of the day, audiences connect with honesty and strong storytelling, irrespective of where the story originated.”
The Hindi adaptation of Funral is still in the early stages of development. Ravi revealed that discussions with directors are currently ongoing and there has already been initial interest from an actor as well. However, he clarified that the writing process is still underway and no release timeline has been finalised yet.
“Writing is in process, but no timelines can be defined yet,” he confirmed.
With this adaptation, Ravi Bhagchandka hopes to introduce Hindi audiences to a deeply emotional and culturally rich story that celebrates human connection, memories and the meaning of life itself. If handled with the same sensitivity and honesty as the original, the Hindi version of Funral could become another powerful example of regional cinema inspiring mainstream storytelling across India.
