I was in my twenties when Dr. Manmohan Singh took charge of India’s economic destiny—not as our Prime Minister, but as the Finance Minister. At that time, his name was unfamiliar to most Indians, just as the idea of economic liberalisation was uncharted territory for a country grappling with stagnation after four decades of independence.

Then came a pivotal moment in Indian history. Then Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao had entrusted Dr. Singh with the role of Finance Minister. What followed was nothing short of transformative. India opened its doors to a new economic era, one that changed the trajectory of our nation forever.

Dr. Singh’s soft-spoken and humble demeanor had often been mistaken for weakness by his political opponents. Yet, these traits reflected his true strength—a man of unyielding focus, profound intellect, and unwavering dedication to the nation. The word that encapsulated his life and work is “dignified.” His leadership has left an indelible mark on India’s history.

As we reflect on India’s rise as a global economic powerhouse, it is impossible not to acknowledge Dr. Singh’s immense contribution. From his groundbreaking economic reforms to his steady guidance as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh’s legacy remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come.

Architect of Economic Liberalisation: In 1991, amidst a severe economic crisis, Dr. Singh had introduced sweeping reforms, dismantling decades of protectionist policies. This ushered in an era of growth, foreign investment, and innovation.

Academic Excellence: He had been a brilliant academic, earning a DPhil in Economics from the University of Oxford. His thesis on India’s export competitiveness remains a reference for economic scholars.

Tenure at International Institutions: Before entering Indian politics, Dr. Singh held prominent positions at the World Bank, the United Nations, and as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.

The Silent Reformer: Despite his reserved nature, Dr. Singh had boldly tackled issues like tax reforms, modernising the banking system, and boosting the IT and telecom sectors.

Champion of Rural Development: Under his leadership as Prime Minister, landmark schemes like MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) were launched, significantly reducing rural poverty.

A Rare Quality of Integrity: Known for his honesty and integrity, Dr. Singh’s reputation remained untarnished even during politically challenging times.

Advocate for Peace: As Prime Minister, he had championed peace talks with neighbouring countries, emphasising diplomacy over hostility.

Crisis Manager: During the global financial meltdown of 2008, his steady leadership had helped India weather the storm and maintain its growth trajectory.

Dr. Manmohan Singh’s life and work stand as a testament to how intellect, dignity, and unwavering focus can transform a nation. He redefined leadership—not through fiery speeches, but through quiet, determined actions. As India stands tall on the global stage, a significant share of the credit belongs to him for laying the foundation of economic progress and inclusive development.

Dr. Singh was a leader who taught us that true power lies in service and humility. His legacy will continue to inspire us to strive for a better, more equitable India.

Thank you, Sir, for being the guiding light in our journey toward progress. Rest in peace.
