Final preparations are complete for the Hemkund Sahib Yatra 2025, set to open on 25 May. The Indian Army cleared snow along the 13 km trek from Govindghat.
On 19 May, Army teams reached Govindghat. They began cutting through metres of snow. Pathways were widened. Ice was chipped away.
Uttarakhand Police inspected the cleared route on 20 May. They reviewed security posts and emergency plans. Officers mapped rescue points along the trail.
The Uttarakhand Tourism Board introduced eKYC registration this year. Pilgrims now upload their Aadhaar details online before arrival. This speeds up entry at the base camp.
The first jatha departed Govindghat on 22 May. They marched under the guidance of the Panj Pyare. Devotees carried the Sikh flag and recited hymns.
A solemn opening ceremony was held in Rishikesh. Governors, the state’s chief minister and religious leaders offered prayers. They invoked blessings for a safe yatra.
At dawn on 25 May, priests performed the homa ritual at the shrine gates. They drew open the doors to welcome pilgrims. The sanctuary lay framed in pristine snow.
Hemkund Sahib sits at 4,572 m in Chamoli district. The yatra runs only from May to October. Winter snows will close the gates again.
The temple trust, the Army and local administration have joined hands. They will manage medical camps, water stations and security checkpoints.
Thousands of pilgrims are expected this season. Many will trek steep slopes, carrying scarves, incense and sweets. The yatra promises faith, fitness and unity.
